Steam limited accounts explained

What the five dollar rule is, which features it blocks, and why new accounts get no card drops.

Frequently asked

How do I remove the limited status on Steam?

Spend the equivalent of five US dollars on Steam — a game purchase or a Steam Wallet top-up both qualify. Activating third-party keys, receiving gifts and claiming 100% off games do not count.

Do limited accounts get trading card drops?

Not straight away. On an account that has never met the spending threshold, card drops are held back until a game has around three hours of playtime, and that requirement applies to each game separately.

Does claiming free games lift the limitation?

No. A 100% off promotion processes as a zero-value order, so it contributes nothing toward the five dollar threshold no matter how many you claim.

Can I still idle games on a limited account?

Yes. Playtime accrues normally regardless of account status. Only the card drops are gated, and only until each game passes roughly three hours.
